Tony Stark was a technical genius who used his inventions to found Stark International. His company soon grew into a multi-national conglomerate, making Tony Stark an extremely wealthy man. Stark then enjoyed the life of a jet-setting playboy, until the fateful day when an exploding bomb lodged a piece of shrapnel a fraction of an inch from his heart. To save his life, and to escape from his would-be assassins, he fashioned a high-tech pacemaker into a suit of armor.
On that day, Tony Stark became Iron Man. Over the years, Stark used his genius to design progressively more powerful suits of armor, and to devise special suits for space and under-sea travel.
A founding member of the Avengers , Iron Man had a high profile. Stark, however, retained his secret identity, claiming Iron Man was his bodyguard. This facade was abetted by Starks ability to remotely control his suits of armor.
